Contexting attempts to engage with the challenges and events around us from a perspective that is informed by placing these challenges in context–i.e. seen holistically and in their varied aspects.  This is  cultural anthropology’s approach to understanding societies across time and space.  I am a cultural anthropologist who has explored globalization processes from 1600 to the present, with a special interest in East Asia’s place in the process. I am also interested in globalization in relationship to youth, technology, and language.  As a result of having taught first generation and nontraditional students who struggled with financial and other challenges resulting from our economy’s recent difficulties, I am increasingly interested in issue related to social inequality.
